Suspensions and appeals

Why an account is suspended, what you can still do, and how to appeal.

Why an account is suspended, what you can still do, and how to appeal.

Why an account is suspended

  • Breaking the Community Guidelines repeatedly. Seven breaches in 30 days suspends an account for seven days, and it lifts by itself. Ten in 30 days, or a breach of the most serious rules, suspends it until a person at Barota has looked at it.
  • A safety concern. A person at Barota can suspend an account while a safety concern is looked into. It stays suspended until a person reviews it.

Two things that are not suspensions

  • A 24-hour posting restriction. At the fifth post in 30 days that the Community Guidelines don't allow, you can't post or comment for 24 hours. Messaging and everything else work as usual, a line at the top of every page says when it ends, and it ends by itself.
  • A review hold. If several accounts try to post content the Community Guidelines don't allow, aimed at the same person or hub within a short time, each can be put on hold while a person at Barota reviews it. You can still use Barota and be seen, but you can't post, comment or send messages until the hold is lifted or a decision is made, normally within 24 hours. A line at the top of every page says so.

Neither has an appeal, because each ends or is decided within a day. If you think one was wrong, email safety@barota.co.

What you'll see

When you sign in you'll see that your account is suspended, why, whether a person or an automatic check decided it, and when it ends or that it's waiting for a review.

While it's suspended you can't post, message or buy and sell, and others can't see your profile. Nothing is deleted. You can still download your data, delete your account (deleting doesn't lift a suspension) or sign out.

Appealing

  • Tap Appeal on the page you see when you sign in, within 30 days of the suspension.
  • Tell us why in your own words (up to 2,000 characters).
  • A person at Barota reads it, never the person who made the decision, and decides within 7 days. If it takes longer, it's passed to someone more senior and you're told.
  • You can appeal each suspension once. Your account stays suspended while the appeal is open.

The decision

You're emailed the decision either way, with the reason.

  • Upheld: the suspension is lifted straight away. If another suspension is still open, you're told that too.
  • Refused: the suspension stays as it was, and you can see the reason when you sign in.

When a suspension lifts, you can post, message and buy and sell again, and others can see your profile.
