News shows you headlines from real news outlets, in the languages you read. Every headline opens the story on the outlet's own site. Barota doesn't rewrite, summarise or store the news.
Your languages. News reads news outlets in every language you chose in Settings → Language, plus English, which is always included. If you're not signed in, you see this site's language plus English.
Newest first. Within your languages, stories are listed newest first, and the order is the same for everyone who reads those languages. Nothing is ranked by what other people click.
Regions are an optional filter. You start on All regions. To narrow down, choose a region: Africa, Americas, Asia, Australia, Europe, Middle East, South Asia or UK, after All and Global. Nothing narrows itself for you, and where you live never decides what you see.
Your saved view. Narrow News the way you like (a region, a source, a time window) and tap Save as my view. News opens there each time you visit, on any device, until you tap Clear. You can also clear it in Settings → Language → News. Nothing is saved unless you ask.
Refreshed every 15 minutes. The line at the top tells you when News last checked the news outlets.
Which news outlets. Every news outlet on News names the editor responsible for it and gives a way to raise a correction. Each language has at least three news outlets, and no single owner supplies more than a third of a language. Some news outlets show a short line under their name about who funds or owns them.
Nothing. News is free to read, with or without an account, and there is no subscription or upgrade.
No ads from Barota. Barota shows no ads in News, sells no placement and earns nothing from it.
Headlines and Video. At the top of News, switch between Headlines and Video. Video shows videos and live streams from the same news outlets, with live streams first where an outlet runs one. The pictures on video tiles are fetched by Barota, so your device makes no request to YouTube until you tap. When you tap, the outlet's own player loads, and it may show its own or YouTube's ads.
If you're 16 or 17, videos don't play inside Barota. Tapping one opens it on the news outlet's own page.
Nothing is built from what you read. Barota doesn't use your reading to target anything.
If some news outlets in your language aren't responding, News tells you at the top of the page. If every news outlet for a region is down, it says the region is temporarily unavailable. That isn't a quiet news day, and it isn't your connection. We check the news outlets every day.
A headline. If you're signed in, tap Report on the headline and choose a reason: Not what it says it is, Hate speech, Spam, Child sexual abuse material, or Other. A Barota moderator looks at it. They can hide that headline for everyone, or remove the news outlet if it keeps happening.
The story itself. Barota doesn't decide whether a news outlet's reporting is true. To get a story corrected, contact the news outlet: each one gives a way to raise corrections on its own site.
If you're a publisher and would rather your news outlet wasn't on News, email legal@barota.co.
