Terms of Service

Version 1.0 · Effective 3 October 2026 · Barota Ltd

These Terms govern your use of Barota. They are governed by the law of England and Wales, and the English courts have exclusive jurisdiction (subject to Section 20).

1. Who we are

Barota is operated by Barota Ltd, registered in England and Wales. Barota is a Community Operating System platform.

2. Eligibility

You must be 18 or over to use Barota. This is a hard requirement, and there is no under-18 tier. Age is verified, not self-declared. Every member completes an identity check with an identity document and a live selfie as part of signing up, run by our verification partner; an account is not opened until it is done. Members who joined before the check was part of signing up are asked to complete it the next time they sign in. One account per person. Previously banned users may not create accounts. We may suspend or remove, without notice, any account we reasonably believe belongs to someone under 18, and we may require proof of age.

If an identity check does not pass, the account is not opened. This includes a document issued by a country under UK, EU or US sanctions, which we screen by the country that issued the document. Barota does not tell you which part of a check did not pass. If you think a refusal is wrong, contact us and a person will look at it. A sign-up that has not completed the identity check within 3 days of the account being created is deleted, together with anything entered so far.

3. Your account

You must provide accurate information. One phone number per account. You are responsible for the security of your account. Barota reserves the right to suspend or terminate accounts that breach these Terms.

4. Platform as intermediary

Barota is a platform and marketplace. Barota is NOT a party to user transactions, a seller, an employer, an employment agency, a bank, a financial institution, an event organiser, a publisher, or a creator of user content.

Barota's liability for user generated content is limited by the E-Commerce Regulations 2002 Regulation 19 and the Defamation Act 2013 Section 5. Barota is not responsible for content posted by users provided Barota acts as a neutral host and removes content when properly notified.

Barota is not responsible for: the quality, safety, legality or delivery of goods and services between users; the conduct of users meeting in person; the outcomes of employment or hire relationships formed through the Platform; the accuracy of event listings; or financial or medical advice given by users through the Platform.

Total liability cap: Barota's total liability for any claim shall not exceed the greater of (a) the total fees paid by the user to Barota in the preceding 12 months or (b) £100. Barota is not liable for indirect, consequential, incidental, special or punitive damages.

Nothing in these Terms limits Barota's liability for death or personal injury arising from Barota's negligence, for fraud, or for any liability that cannot be excluded by law.

5. Content ownership and licence

Users retain ownership of all content they post. Users grant Barota a non-exclusive, royalty-free, worldwide licence to display and distribute their content on the Platform. This licence ends when the content is deleted. Barota's branding, design and software are owned by Barota Ltd.

6. Prohibited conduct

  • Illegal activity under English law or the law of your country of residence.
  • Harmful content: hateful, threatening, harassing, defamatory or obscene material.
  • Child sexual abuse material: zero tolerance. The account is held at once, and the material is reported to the authority responsible for the country concerned (for example NCMEC, the IWF or the NCA) and to law enforcement.
  • Terrorism and incitement to violence.
  • Spam and automated access.
  • Impersonation.
  • Non-consensual intimate images.
  • Doxxing (sharing private personal information without consent).
  • Platform integrity attacks (hacking, reverse engineering, DDoS).
  • Circumvention of safety features including age verification, profanity filters or blocking systems.

7. Content moderation

Automated filters apply to all content. Reported content is reviewed by a human within 24 hours as standard, and within 1 hour for critical reports. A suspension is appealed from the suspension screen in the app, within 30 days of it beginning; any other appeal may be sent to legal@barota.co within 30 days. Barota's decision on appeal is final.

If several accounts try to post content the Community Guidelines don't allow, aimed at the same person or hub within a short time, each of those accounts can be put on hold while a person at Barota reviews it. A held account can still be used and seen, but cannot post, comment or send messages until Barota lifts the hold or suspends the account, normally within 24 hours. At the fifth breach of the Community Guidelines in 30 days, an account cannot post or comment for 24 hours; this ends by itself. Neither a hold nor a 24-hour posting restriction is a suspension.

8. Profanity and abusive language

Barota checks posts and comments automatically for abusive, hateful and harmful language, including slurs, harassment and grooming language, with common misspellings and character substitutions. The automatic check currently covers English; content in other languages is reviewed by a person when it is reported. Repeated violations within 30 days lead, in turn, to a warning, a 24-hour posting restriction, a 7-day suspension that ends by itself, and a suspension that stays until a person at Barota lifts it, with law enforcement referral where the law requires.

9. Payments and subscriptions

Payments are processed by Barota's payment gateway. Barota does not store payment card details. Account type (personal, business, organisation, creator) and subscriptions are separate: holding a business account does not by itself grant access to a paid feature, and the matching subscription must be active. Founder accounts include every plan at no charge. Reading, watching, applying to jobs, attending events, buying, following and messaging are always free and never require a subscription.

Each feature has its own subscription. Monthly prices, with the effective price per 28 days when billed annually, are: Creator Plus 4.99 (annual 3.84); Dating 12.99 (9.99) and Dating Premium 24.99 (19.22); Rishta 14.99 (11.53) and Rishta Premium 39.99 (30.76); Marketplace Standard 14.99 (11.53) and Marketplace Pro 34.99 (26.92); Events Standard 14.99 (11.53) and Events Pro 29.99 (23.07); Jobs Standard 14.99 (11.53) and Jobs Pro 29.99 (23.07); Trade Standard 14.99 (11.53) and Trade Pro 29.99 (23.07); Bookings Standard 14.99 (11.53) and Bookings Pro 29.99 (23.07); Fundraise Standard 9.99 (7.68); Wallet Pro 4.99 (3.84). Creating and running a Hub is free — Hubs have no subscription, and any commerce a Hub links to is priced by that feature’s own terms above. All prices are in pounds sterling. Annual plans are billed once a year at thirteen 28-day periods.

  • Monthly subscriptions are billed every 28 days and auto-renew unless cancelled. No refund; cancel anytime, access continues until the period end.
  • Annual subscriptions: full refund within 28 days of purchase, no refund after 28 days, access continues until the period end.
  • You can cancel any subscription at any time from the Subscriptions page; cancellation stops future renewals and does not remove access already paid for.
  • Barota Credits are a virtual platform currency, not cryptocurrency. They have no cash value and are non-refundable. They can't be used outside the Platform, and they can't be given to another member.
  • Members aged 18 or over can send money to each other through the Wallet, in the sender's Wallet currency. If the person you pay has not connected a payout account, the money is held for up to 7 days and then returned to you in full, with no Barota fee kept, and you are both told.
  • Barota takes 1% from what the recipient of a send or a scheduled payment receives, 1% from what the organiser of a group collection receives, and 1.5% from what the recipient of a paid request receives. The sender or contributor pays exactly the amount they choose. A standard withdrawal is free; an instant withdrawal costs 1%, with a minimum fee set for each currency. No fee has a cap. Barota's fees are charged in addition to any payment gateway fee. Wallet fees
  • A business on Barota has its own Business Wallet, separate from its owners' personal Wallets. Only the business's active owners can see its balance, payout account and payouts, and only an active owner can withdraw. Withdrawals are paid to a payout account in the business's own name, and each one records the owner who made it.
  • A member can make one withdrawal in any 24 hours, and so can a business, whichever owner makes it. A withdrawal that fails does not count. Wallet help
  • A change to a business's payout account takes effect 72 hours after the new account is ready with the payment gateway. Every owner is told, any owner can cancel it during that time, and payouts go to the current account until then. Wallet help
  • A registered business's shop orders and bookings are credited to its Business Wallet once they settle, in the currency of the sale and after the usual fee, and a refund made afterwards is deducted from it. Events and Trade jobs are paid to the person who runs them. Business registration

10. Bazaar terms

Sellers are solely responsible for listing accuracy, product quality and safety, legal compliance, dispatch and returns.

Prohibited items include illegal items, counterfeit goods, weapons, controlled substances, alcohol without licensing, tobacco, adult content, live animals, dangerous goods, and items infringing intellectual property rights.

International sellers (India, Pakistan, UAE, Canada, Australia and all other countries) are solely responsible for compliance with their own country's export laws, tax obligations including GST/VAT, and consumer protection requirements. Barota is not responsible for customs duties, import taxes or delivery delays on international shipments. Buyers are responsible for import duties in their country.

Consumer rights under the Consumer Rights Act 2015 (for UK buyers) are against the seller, not Barota.

Bazaar has four tiers with different limits and fees. Free: up to 10 product listings, 2 images per product, 8% processing fee per sale. Standard: up to 50 listings, 3 images per product, 5% fee, CSV bulk upload. Pro: up to 100 listings, 8 images per product, 3% fee, CSV bulk upload plus Shopify and WooCommerce sync. Enterprise (activated by Barota on request): unlimited listings, 15 images per product, 1.5% fee. Processing fees are deducted from each sale. Product and image limits are enforced when listings are created.

CSV import lets Standard tier and above bulk-create listings from a spreadsheet; sellers remain responsible for the accuracy of imported data. Shopify and WooCommerce integrations (Pro and Enterprise) sync products and inventory between the connected platform and Barota. Barota is not responsible for third party platform API downtime, changes or errors. Barota will attempt to sync inventory changes (including decrementing stock on a connected platform after an Barota sale) but cannot guarantee real-time accuracy; where a sync fails, Barota retries and, if it still cannot complete, notifies the seller to update inventory manually. Sellers are responsible for keeping stock levels accurate across all their sales channels.

11. Jobs and hire terms

Barota is not a recruitment agency. Any employment or service contract is between the parties directly. The Barota Verified badge indicates identity verification only, not endorsement of professional qualifications. Employers are responsible for their own due diligence. Listings for regulated professions must hold appropriate licences.

12. Events terms

Event organisers are solely responsible for event safety, licensing compliance, insurance, accurate description, honouring tickets and refunding if the event is cancelled.

13. Bookings terms

Booking businesses are solely responsible for the services they provide, professional insurance and health and safety compliance. Medical and health practitioners must hold appropriate qualifications and registrations.

13a. Background checks for work with children and vulnerable people

Where a service involves working with children or other vulnerable people, the provider must hold a current enhanced background check. A check counts for at most 365 days from its issue date, or less where local practice requires, unless it is enrolled in a live update service that confirms it every month. Barota tells the provider 30 days, 7 days and 1 day before a check or its insurance lapses. When it lapses, the provider's badge comes off, they cannot take new bookings, and their future sessions with existing clients are paused. If the check is renewed within 14 days, those sessions continue as booked. If it is not, each paused booking is cancelled with a full refund, including any deposit and Barota's fee, no later than its own start time; where work had already begun, Barota's dispute process decides what is refunded and what is paid. Barota does not move a client to another provider.

14. Fundraising terms

Campaign organisers are responsible for the accuracy of campaigns, the use of funds and charity law compliance where applicable. Gift Aid misrepresentation is reported to HMRC. Barota is a platform, not a charity.

15. Creator and content terms

Creators are responsible for all content compliance. Subscription creators must deliver content consistently. Subscribers are entitled to a refund if a creator fails to deliver for 30 consecutive days. Verified journalists are bound by accuracy and ethics standards.

16. Age assurance and under-18 accounts

Barota is an adults-only platform for people aged 18 and over. Every member's age is established by the identity check at sign-up (section 2). If we reasonably believe an account belongs to someone under 18, we suspend it and ask the person to verify that they are 18 or over. If they cannot, we remove the account and delete its data. To prevent immediate re-registration, a removal is recorded against a one-way hash of the identity document used, and that block lifts automatically on the person's eighteenth birthday. Where a removed account had used Dating or Rishta, we carry out a safeguarding review.

17. Data protection

Personal data is processed in accordance with our Privacy Policy and in compliance with UK GDPR, the Data Protection Act 2018, EU GDPR, CCPA (California), the Australia Privacy Act 1988, India DPDPA 2023 and Pakistan PECA 2016.

18. Law enforcement cooperation

Barota cooperates fully with valid legal process from any jurisdiction globally, including court orders, warrants, subpoenas and equivalent instruments. User data, account information, activity logs, messages and transaction records are disclosable under valid legal process. Barota will notify affected users where legally permitted. Where an imminent risk of harm exists, Barota will proactively contact emergency services without waiting for legal process. Barota will not protect users engaged in illegal activity. Victims with a valid court order requiring disclosure of a perpetrator's identity should contact legal@barota.co with legal documentation; Barota will comply promptly and fully.

18a. Verification services

Beyond the identity check every member completes, which carries no badge, Barota offers three kinds of check. A business can have its registration checked (Level 1). A part of Barota can set a deeper check for its own purpose (Level 2), such as a Hub showing it may represent a real institution. A member of a licensed profession can have their credential checked. Each check is shown on its own and is never combined into one score or status.

A badge states exactly what Barota checked, and when. Where a public register or regulator exists, Barota's Verification team checks what you give us against it by hand, and the badge names that register or regulator and the date it was checked. For example, “Registration Verified with Companies House” or “Registered with [the regulator]”. Where no register can be checked, the document you upload is stored and not assessed, and the badge says so: “Registration Document Submitted” or “Licence Document Submitted”. A work-email proof reads “Email Confirmed”. Barota never shows a bare “Verified”.

A badge states exactly what Barota checked, or that a document was submitted and not checked. It is not a guarantee of honesty, quality or future behaviour, and it is not professional, legal or medical advice. Always do your own research. A credential is shown only if you choose to show it, and you can hide it at any time. A check lapses when the document it rests on expires, and it can be checked again on request. Decisions are made by Barota's Verification team, which gives a reason when it cannot confirm something. You may withdraw a check at any time. We may remove a badge if information is found to be false.

Each check is paid for by the business or professional being checked, at the price shown before you submit. These checks are not open yet: nothing can be submitted or charged until their prices are published.

18b. Protected speech and prohibited hatred

Barota protects political expression, including criticism of any government and advocacy for peaceful political movements and self-determination such as Khalistan. Barota has zero tolerance for identity-based hatred, incitement to violence, terrorism and coordinated hate. Criticising a government is permitted; attacking people because of who they are is not.

18c. Medical and traditional-remedy content

Content that makes health, medical or traditional-remedy claims carries a disclaimer that it is not medical advice. Where the author holds a professional credential that Barota's Verification team has checked, and they have chosen to show it, the disclaimer instead reads: “Verification of registration, not the accuracy of this post.” Users must not present such content as a substitute for professional care. Content that risks serious harm is removed.

18e. Dating and Matrimonial subscriptions

Dating and Rishta (matrimonial) are paid subscription products, available only to users aged 18 and over. Before either can be activated, you must confirm on screen that you are 18 or older; providing false information about your age violates these Terms and may result in permanent account suspension and reporting to the relevant authorities. Members under 18 cannot access these features and see them clearly marked as available at 18. Dating is 12.99 per month (or an annual plan), and Dating Premium is 24.99 per month. Rishta is 14.99 per month, and Rishta Premium is 39.99 per month. Subscriptions renew automatically until cancelled and can be cancelled at any time. Photos must be your own and appropriate; matching is based on mutual likes (dating) or mutual expressions of interest (matrimonial). Opening messages are limited and images cannot be sent before both people have engaged. Matrimonial profiles display a verification summary; verification badges confirm only what was checked at approval and are not a guarantee. Safety tools, including a safety briefing, share-my-plans and quick exit, apply throughout.

18f. Calls

Barota offers audio, video and group calls, provided using Daily.co as our processor. Calls are permitted only between members who are connected on Barota; you cannot call, and cannot be called by, someone you are not connected with. Group calls are limited to the members of the relevant group conversation. Barota does not record calls. Recording a call, in whole or in part, without the informed consent of every participant is prohibited and may be unlawful; doing so is a violation of these Terms and may result in suspension. You are responsible for your conduct on calls, which remains subject to our prohibited-conduct and community rules. Calls require a working device, camera/microphone permissions and an internet connection, and may be unavailable if a call cannot be established.

18d. Community notes, Safety Council and transparency

Members may add community notes for context. A note appears straight away and is clearly labelled “Unverified — under community review” until enough members find it helpful, or until it survives a challenge. Anyone may challenge a note’s accuracy with a reason: a single objection never removes a note, and a note is only removed when several members independently agree it is inaccurate. When a note is removed the reason stays visible, so removals are open rather than silent. Disputes the community cannot settle go to the Council to decide. A member Safety Council advises on safety policy and activates at 1,100 members. Barota publishes a transparency report every quarter, and gives you a statement of reasons for every decision that restricts your account or your content (Settings, Safety).

18g. News and third-party content

News shows headlines from independent news outlets. For each story it shows the headline as the outlet publishes it, the outlet's name, and a link that opens the story on the outlet's own site. Where an outlet's own terms allow it, News also shows up to two lines of the summary the outlet publishes in its feed; where they do not, it shows the headline and link only. Barota does not store, edit, rewrite or summarise news outlets' stories, and it does not rank them.

The stories belong to the news outlets that publish them. Barota is not responsible for their content, and their own terms apply when you follow a link. In Video, the pictures on video tiles are fetched by Barota from the outlet's video service and held only briefly; nothing from that service loads on your device until you tap. Videos and live streams then play in the outlet's own player, which may show the outlet's or YouTube's advertising; Barota shows no advertising in News and earns nothing from it.

Publishers: if you would rather your news outlet did not appear in News, or you want a particular headline removed (a takedown request), email legal@barota.co with the outlet's name and, for a single headline, its link. Barota removes the outlet or the headline and records the reason.

19. Changes to terms

We give 30 days notice of material changes by email or in-app notification. Continued use constitutes acceptance.

20. Governing law and disputes

These Terms are governed by the law of England and Wales, with the English courts having exclusive jurisdiction. This is subject to carve-outs for EU mandatory consumer rights, Australian Consumer Law, the Indian Consumer Protection Act 2019, and Pakistani consumer and data protection law. An informal dispute resolution attempt is required before legal proceedings: contact legal@barota.co for a 14-day response.
